EDTECH 597 Video Post - Parental Involvement

I fully believe that parental involvement is one of the keys to student success. The school that I teach at is a Christian school that seeks to build a school-family-church relationship. The school believes that education can be enhanced by having this relationship. Often times when an aspect of that relationship is broken, the child does not succeed as well as (s)he could.

  1. I think your post couldn't be more on point. I feel that there are many children being raised by television, teachers, and peers which does not create a strong foundation for their development into successful adults. Parents need to be the #1 role model and support for all things in their children's lives.

    1. I think I, personally, have strong feelings regarding this because my parents were not as involved in making sure I was succeeding in school, especially when I reached middle school and high school. I did well enough not to raise any alarms, but I certainly did not give it my best effort. Now as a teacher, I regret that time that I lost, and I want to have my students work their best at all times.

  2. Nathan, this is a great subject choice. Parental involvement is pivotal in a child's academic success. I know that this is an area I am really looking at for next year. I am planning to invite parents, particularly fathers, into our classroom on a regularly basis. This will be beneficial to all children, but research has shown that boys especially need more male role models. Who better to mentor, guide and encourage kids than their parents? Thanks for sharing this!

    1. That is great! I know that many of the single-parent families I have seen in my school are raised by mothers, making it ever more important to also have a male role model, both boys and girls. I appreciate being a male teacher in the elementary setting, and I hope that you are able to do well with your parent involvement.
